Enlightenment to Romanticism, Cybernetics to Complexity
The shift in the source of light
The Enlightenment gave us light as an external thing. Reason was a lamp held up to a world laid out before us, a mechanism to be observed, decoded, and steered. The knower stood apart from the known. Kant’s motto for the whole age was Sapere aude, dare to know, and his definition of Enlightenment was “the human being’s emergence from his self-imposed immaturity” 1through the public use of reason. Light was universal, impersonal, and above all outside. It fell on the object from the position of a detached observer.
The cosmos is clockwork. You stand outside it, read its laws, and, crucially, you could in principle govern it. This is already a cybernetic picture of the world: reality as a governable mechanism, transparent to the engineer who occupies the privileged vantage point beyond the system.
Romanticism did not reject light. It relocated its source. The light moved inward, into imagination, feeling, and the sublime. Goethe’s apocryphal last words, Mehr Licht, more light, sit at the hinge of the two ages. Novalis wrote that the mysterious path leads inward.2 Coleridge called the imagination “the living Power and prime Agent of all human Perception,” a repetition in the finite mind of the eternal act of creation.3 And Schelling collapsed the last distance between observer and observed: nature is visible spirit, spirit is invisible nature.4 There is no longer a place to stand outside the thing you are perceiving. You are in it, and it is in you.
This is exactly the passage from cybernetics to complexity. Cybernetics is the Enlightenment observer with a thermostat. The engineer sits outside the system, defines a set point, and corrects the world back toward the target through negative feedback. It is control from a privileged exterior: the clockwork cosmos.
Complexity dissolves that exterior. There is no vantage point above the system, because you are a component of it. Order is emergent, not imposed. It arises from local interaction rather than descending from a controller. Meaning is generated from within rather than transmitted from without. This is Schelling’s fused observer and Coleridge’s participatory imagination, translated into the language of systems. The interior light again.
Robert Kegan5 gives this its developmental spine through the distinction between subject and object. What we are subject to, we are embedded in. We cannot see it, because we are it. It has us. What we can take as object, we can hold, look at, reflect on, and take responsibility for. Growth is the ongoing conversion of subject into object.
To be subject to something is to be inside it with no light on it, the Romantic condition of immersion. To make it object is to illuminate it, step back, and take it in hand. Kegan’s crucial insight is that maturity is not choosing one pole. It is the capacity to make more and more of your world into object while never pretending you have escaped the soup entirely. That “both at once” is precisely the cybernetics-and-complexity synthesis. Hold the system as object, and know you remain a participant in it.
Literacy is the subject-to-object move in its purest form. To become literate is to take something you were once drowning in, sound, symbol, the flux of the world, and be able to read it: to hold it, turn it over, and act on it deliberately.
Modernity is founded on this because modernity is the moment the world itself becomes text: print, the archive, bureaucracy, the legible citizen, the readable market. To be modern is to live in a world that must be read.
The Enlightenment theory treats literacy as decoding. Light hits the text. A reader standing outside extracts the meaning that was sitting there inertly. This is the transmission model. Information sent, signal received, reader unchanged. It is cybernetic reading. The Romantic correction says reading is participatory. You are altered by what you read. The light comes from inside the encounter, not from a beam aimed at a static page. Comprehension is transformation, not extraction.
This is why AI literacy cannot mean merely knowing how the machine works from the outside. That is the thermostat model, the operator studying a mechanism across a safe distance. Genuine literacy is developmental. It is making your own relationship to the technology into an object you can hold, while remaining honest that you are also in the soup with it, being reshaped by it in real time. Literacy as vertical growth.
McLuhan tells us that the meaning was never in the content. It was in the form that reshapes perception and, over time, reshapes the perceiver.6 That is the Romantic correction aimed directly at information theory. Claude Shannon deliberately built meaning out of information. In his framework, information is the reduction of uncertainty, the distinction between signal and noise, and, in his own words, the semantic aspects of communication are irrelevant to the engineering problem.7 That is Enlightenment cybernetics in its most rigorous form: transmission from an exterior, meaning bracketed off.
The DIKW ladder, data, information, knowledge, wisdom, is secretly the same climb from external light to interior light. Data is signal received, pure exterior, Shannon’s domain. Information is signal given structure and relevance. Knowledge is what happens when you are changed by it, the Romantic, participatory turn. Wisdom is Kegan’s highest order: holding the whole system as object while knowing you are inside it: the synthesis, not a further rung of extraction. The ladder is not a pipeline that moves stuff around. It is a developmental ascent from being subject to the world toward being able to hold it as object, without ever leaving it.
Here aesthetics stops being decoration. The Enlightenment split beauty from use: Kant’s disinterested pleasure, the beautiful as that which pleases apart from any purpose. Romanticism fuses them bEnlightenment Beauty is how meaning becomes felt. It is the mechanism by which information climbs into knowledge and knowledge into wisdom. Aesthetics is the interior light doing work, the felt dimension through which a transmission becomes a transformation.
And this is the economic wager. In an Enlightenment economy, you pay for utility. For information transmitted, for a mechanism operated, for training that moves a person toward a fixed set point. Value lives in the exterior, the deliverable, the decoded output. In a complexity economy, value migrates up the ladder. What becomes scarce and valuable is the aesthetic, developmental, wisdom-making encounter, the experience that changes the person who has it. People no longer pay merely for information they could extract themselves. They pay for the conditions of their own vertical development. Meaning-making itself becomes the economic value.
That is the whole reason for a Critical Business School. Training is cybernetic, correcting a person toward an external target. Development is complexity aware, self-curiosuity that leads self-authorship. External light to interior light, cybernetics to complexity, decoding to participation, utility to meaning, is one continuous move. And it is the move that a school for the next economy has to be built around.
