AI is not new, and it’s not going away. What’s left to figure out is when it helps, when it just looks like it’s helping, and where your judgment actually starts. This twelve-week elective is built around that distinction. Three modules, of four sessions, built for the creative who wants to stop reacting and start discerning.
The second cohort of AI Literacy is starting on Tuesday, September 8, at Index in Greenpoint.
In the first cohort, Louis built a site and an accompanying Chrome extension that gathers fashion inspiration online and creates shareable edit links: see the video below.
Cara rebuilt her blog with Claude, and with it, her sense of what the tool is actually for.
And Danielle practiced writing with an LLM in a way that respects and adds to meaning rather than subtracting from or flattening it.
AI is very good at the average: drafting, summarizing, getting unstuck. It has nothing to say about the particular, and the particular is where your work lives.
AI Literacy is three months of learning to tell the two apart, in your own work, with the tools you already use.
How it works
We meet Tuesdays, 6:00 to 7:30 PM, at Index (698 Manhattan Ave, Brooklyn).
Each month starts with a masterclass:
September 8 — Thinking. When Computational Thinking Slows You Down
October 6 — Communicating. Aesthetics and Self-Actualization
November 3 — Making. Automation and Practice
Between sessions, we meet on Slack, share readings and videos, and have a physical library where you can borrow books.
No technical background is needed, and you should already be using AI tools but want to think more carefully about how to use them.
The course is $500 a month for three months. Sign up before September 1, and it is 20% off for the entire cohort: $400 a month, $1,200 instead of $1,500.
The group stays small on purpose. If you have questions, reply here or write to me.
